Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative

Mission Statement: The Holyoke Safe Neighborhood Initiative is a partnership between local, state & federal law enforcement; city & state government; civic & human service organizations; faith based organizations; the business community; education providers; property managers; and residents coming together with a goal to create safe, healthy & economically viable neighborhoods through information sharing, identifying at-risk youth, referrals and community efforts in specific Holyoke neighborhoods.

Presentation by Jordana Willers, Ed.M  (IHR)                        1:05pm - 1:15pm

Jordana introduced herself as a youth training and systems specialist in the Central and Western areas of the state. They offer access to a continuum of treatment for youth and young adults with substance use disorders. IHR is in partnership with Bureau of Substance Addiction (BSAS) to help youth service agencies increase ablilty to identify and address substance use issues.

They will offer consultation on substance use to serving systems and organizations along with resources and ongoing assistance in the legal arena.  They will also help navigate and identify barriers to treatment, across multiple systems.

Jordana passed around handouts for Substance Abuse Treatment-Outpatient Services for Youth (under the age of 18) in Western Ma along with Youth and Young Adult Substance Use Services Directory.

Family Recovery Council of Hampden County meets quarterly from 1:30-3:30. Next meeting will be at Providence Behavioral Health on Tuesday, March 6, 2018.

Agency Overview and Updates                                                1:15pm - 2:20pm

Veronica Garcia: WGBY 37

They will be hosting a Christmas Concert event at Holyoke High School on 12/22/17 at 5:30.  They are still looking for donations of toys and winter coats.

Angela Callahan: RVCC

They will be opening a new location in Easthampton in 2018.  Their pharmacy in River Valley is doing well and provides patients with the convenience of filling scripts after meeting with clinicians. They recently received a sex education grant to serve ages 14 and older.  They are currently in Dean and Holyoke High and are looking for more referrals.

James Biscoe: Cleanslate

They have been around since 2009 and focus on opiate/alcohol addiction.  They have new medical director, no waiting list and have locations across the state; as well as Holyoke and Springfield.

Sarah Schmidt: Gill Technology Center/HCC

Passed around flyer and have classes for GED, workforce training and will be presenting at the next HSNI meeting in January surrounding the work of Gill/HCC in Holyoke.  Sarah talked about a recent grant they received to start a culinary program through HCC.  It will be a 20 hrs a week for 9 weeks to gain employment in the culinary field.  Utilize the following link for more information:

Johanna Acevedo: Girls Inc. of Holyoke

Academic based afterschool program for girls ages 5-17 concentrating on growth, education, and independence.

Lexus Phillips: Boys and Girls Club of Great Holyoke

Looking to come out to agencies and speak with youth & adults about writing and the spoken word.  Currently, she is doing a poetry series at Boys and Girls club for 4-6 weeks.  They have basketball at the club on Tuesdays and Wednesdays as well as HISET prep beginning on 1/8/18.

Jordana Willers: Institute for Health and Recovery

Available to come out to agencies to answer any questions our help navigate programs. 7pm on Thursdays, Learn to cope meetings.

Melvin Malave: ROCA

Melvin stated that they are still operating out of Career Point and trying to secure a location for ROCA in Holyoke. They work with proven risk youth between the ages of 17-24 to keep them on the right path. They have begun their ‘Young Mothers’ group in Springfield.

Sandy Ward: Friends of the Holyoke Public Library

Announced the return of their Mini Golf fundraiser for the weekend of 4/6/18 with a team tournament on 4/7/18.

Rodney Allen: Cross Point Clinical Services

Taking applications for Clinical Office Coordinator: crosspointclinical.org.

Neil Desroches: US Attorney’s Office

Neil stated that the US Attorney’s Office is committed to the community surrounding issues of public safety.

Gladys LeBron-Martinez: Career Point

Focused on career/workforce development.  Presently, they have an influx of Puerto Rican families arriving to Holyoke; approximately 300 engaged.  They are currently tracking families in terms of their certification/accreditations with Department of Labor.  At 2pm she runs workshop with Job Corp to teach them about one stop career centers.

Antonio Padilla: Holyoke District Court Probation/Boys and Girls Club of Great Holyoke

Young Marine program will be starting in January and focusing on ages 8-18.  Interested applicants will be screened for acceptance to program through interviews with youth and parents.  Headquarters will be at the Holyoke Boys and Girls Club.

Rachel Dowd: Holyoke Public Library

Rachel passed around December calendar for the programing in the teen room.  Please RSVP for those interested in the Interactive Graphic Novels workshop on 1/17/18 from 4-6pm.

Christine Alger: Holyoke Youth Task Force/RVCC/Connections HHS

Looking to fill slots for afterschool program to get grades up 2 times a week for 1 hr. Christine stated that she is working with River Valley and is looking to come out to agencies/organizations to speak about Sex Education.

Holyoke Youth Task Force is taking applications.  They will be involved/learn public speaking and other events.

Marisol Guevara: Springfield College-PCS

Looking for applicants to pursue Bachelor or Master level degrees in an accelerated 16-24 month program.  Will be hosting an open house on 2/3/18.

Nelson Roman: Nueva Esperonza / Ward 2 City Councilor

Nueva Esperonza is assisting the many families arriving from Puerto Rico.  Looking for toys for 3 Kings Day at Lawrence School on 1/6/18 from 1-3pm.  They recently had a sponsor donate $5,000 and are looking for more donations to support 300 families.  They have recently started a Men of Color Group along with a Women of Color Group to support HIV in conjunction with RVCC.

City Council inauguration is on 1/2/18 at city hall from 10-11am.

Luis Arzola: CHD

1/27/18 from 1-3pm at the Springfield Public Library they will be doing presentation to those families involved with DCF.  Open House to shelters on 12/19/17 1-3pm at 184 Mill Street in Springfield.  Contact This email address is being protected from spambots. Eileen Crosby: Holyoke Public Library

1/13/18 at 1pm event with Mt. Holyoke Professor, David Hernandez.  He is a Professor in Latina/o and specialist in immigration/detention/deportation.  They will be discussing “Boarders Detention in the Trump Era.”
